A message from one of our founders and workers in Christ Jesus
For the past five years, members of Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran Church in Gilbert, Arizona have been serving weekly meals and offering worship opportunities to the local community in Mesa on Tuesday nights. We call the ministry La Mesa, Spanish for “The Table.” It has been an amazing experience gathering together each week to share the love of Jesus and the Lord’s Supper, as a hot, home-cooked dinner with people who have God’s heart – the least, the lost and the lonely. We have learned so much about this community by spending time with them, building great relationships and hearing about their lives and challenges. Their stories have helped shape La Mesa’s story. We have grown to love this community – many or our members say Tuesday night is their favorite time of the week – and we wanted to see how else we might help them.
Rather than relying on what we thought they needed, we asked the community, learning what would help them move forward, especially those looking to find housing. Their feedback has provided direction on the next steps for La Mesa, which will be an expansion into La Mesa Ministries. Our friends told us that, while there are a variety of places that provide food for them, they cannot find places to bathe daily nor to launder their clothing. For those seeking employment, these are major stumbling blocks. They also don’t have a safe place to store their belongings. Their possessions often get stolen or lost if left at their camps or other places, and this fact is especially challenging for those trying to find jobs.
The challenge this community faces is being connected to all the available resources, especially when they are across town, and transportation is a problem. Navigating the many rules and guidelines to obtain services also can be a challenge. A goal of La Mesa Ministries , therefore, is to provide a “one-stop shop” where organizations already providing assistance may come to our community rather than the reverse. We also would help our friends work through some of the obstacles they might face rather then just giving them a phone number to call. Having someone walk along side them on this journey can make all of the difference, and we want to be there to help. For those seeking employment and have enrolled into our program there will be showers a laundry service and secure temporary storage.
Hope Happens Here.
It's what we want this community of dear brothers and sisters to know. We cannot wait to see where God takes us on this thrilling journey! Would you like to be a part of it? Here’s how:
